I choose a location close to the Eglantine gardens and prepared an intervention for wednesday 21/10/09.
The intervention would take place between 9.30 and 13.00 on Wednesday 21/10/09. It could be that I would invite my tutors and fellow students to watch me gathering the information within those times, or invite them to view the documentation within those times. I chose to make my own map of the area staying somewhat within the framework of the task. On Tuesday 20/10/09 between 18.30-22.00 (3.5hours) I will collect information in the area surrounding the eglantine gardens. That night 20/10/09 between 22.30pm-02.00 (3.5hours) I will upload the information I collect onto a google map and link it to this website. I will then send a link to this site to my tutors and fellow students to view the work between 09.30-13.00 (3.5hours) Wednesday 21/10/09.

Start time
18.30
Start point
Corner where Eglantine Avenue meets Malone Road
Armed with crayons, colouring pencils, pens, a cameraphone, voice recorder, memory, a waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers, hiking boots, a rucsac and a bag of haribo jellies I’m on a mission in the rain and with darkness faling to get an image of the area surrounding the Eglantine gardens.

18.38
Fisherwick Presbertyrian Church
It’s pissing rain and there is shelter at the door of the church opposite Eglantine Avenue. It took me ages to cross the street. The traffic is manic at this hour round here. From here I can observe for a while and decide where to go next.

Malone Road
Walking along Malone Road recording the sounds of the street
18.52 Malone Road
18.54
Corner of Lennox Vale
There is a strange house here. The windows and doors are all boarded up and its painted entirley white (or looks white in the dark, could be some shade of mongolia for all I know!) It would be great to project onto at night.
![]() |
From An image of space surrounding a place in 3×3.5hrs) |
My cameraphone isn’t good enough to get a decent shot of the house in this darkness.
There are lots of runners about in the rain.
19.01
Further down Lennox Vale
I found the most beautiful pink roses.

19.05
-The University Councilling Service for Students here(QUB students I’m assuming)
– And the Vice Chancelors Lodge(this place looks like a Palace, I want that job!)
![]() |
From An image of space surrounding a place in 3×3.5hrs) |
-The Edghill Theological College (private) marks the end of Lennox Vale. Really well lit up at the end of a dark street. Quite inviting for something thats private!

19.09
Lennox Vale
-QUB health Centre is here too.
19.13
Malone Road
There are lots of runners about.
I found a dental practice, I was looking for one of those earlier today! There’s no phone number on the sign though- must come back tomorrow!
19.15
Sans Souci Park
This looks like a fancy road! There are some very pretty houses here. OOOHhhh and some hideous apartments too! Walking round in the dark in residential areas like these I feel like I’m in a Hopper painting.
19.19
Further down Sans Souci Park
So much for energy saving. It seems everyones every-light is turned on in this large student apartment block infront of me. A few of them are for sale, they are certinaly not my cuppa tea.
19.20
Nearing the end of the horse-shoe Sans Souci Park
Red Bricks = Belfast
And so Belfast in the Autumn with all of these orange and red leaves on the ground must the the most orange+red place on could be?
19.22
Malone Road
I’m met with the bright and almost blinding lights of a BP filling station at the corner as I exit Sans Souci Park.

Ohhh.. I’ve never seen that before- you pay at the pumps here. I wonder is that self service gone too far? How far will it go in the future. A few years ago did we imagine we would have self service checkouts at tescos? I quite like saying ‘Hello’, ‘Please’, ‘Thankyou’ and ‘Goodbye’ throughout the day when I go places. It breaks the day up. Aren’t it those small pieces of interaction with others, those times we get a warm hello and a helpful smile the very moments that make our day worthwhile and bareable at times? I don’t like that this service station totally ‘self service’.
19.28
Elms Village Student Accomodation
Im met with groups of students dressed up at the exit hopping into taxis. In comparison I do feel a little scruffy in all my raingear!
– Its a totally gated community, with security at the gate so only students can drive in. The taxis come to the exit to collect and drop off.
– Its a big complex, they have lots of apartments, a shop, resteraunts, a bar and a laundry. I have been looking for a laundry and this isn’t too far from my house! Must check it out!

Yep- this laundry room will suit my needs just fine while I’m living in Belfast. I may have to disguise myself as a Queens Student!

Back onto Malone Road
Another Dental Practice, The Guild Practice.
19.50
Malone Road
Everyone that passes me on the street at this hour are either students in tracksuits/shorts coming back from training or others dressed to go out hopping into cabs. Its a misreable night and unless your totally weatherproof (as I am!) why would you be out?
19.51
Malone Road
Cordia lodge B+B
Who-ever came up with this logo?
Definitly doesnt look like a B+B, looks like some middle-sized company or factory!

19.53
Windsor Avenue North
Nothing too appealing to me on this street. I get the feeling that I’m disturbing a quiet street walking up it at this hour.
19.54
Windsor Avenue North
Ohh.. maybe I found something of interest here, the roots of a tree at the first house are coming right up out of the ground and are covered in moss. It looks quite cool and a little eireee in the night!

Malone Avenue
I cross over the street to record the sound of clanging bottles, as two girls walk up the street with bags of alcohol.
20.02 Malone Avenue
20.04
Malone Avenue
The sound of a party from above me. I look up, on the third story of a house the front bay windows are open and a group of students arms half-in, half-out chatting and smoking. The sound of their party, their music and their every word are crystal clear to everyone on the street below. (Some kind of public party!)
20.05
Eglantine Place
Skips of building materials x2 on the street. And they’re a right mess too looks like someone just poured concrete over rubbish and onto the edge of the skip(I wouldn’t say the skip-collecting man will be happy with that!
20.06
Eglantine place
Under a street light.
20.08
At the corner of Eglantine Place
A man with short orange hair in tight curls and unusually long arms crosses me on the street.
20.09

There’s a man talking to himself behind me.
So I stop to write it down!

There’s a service on. I would like to go in but it could be something private, and the door isn’t open anyhow. I walk around the building and try the door- definitly not open but the lights are on. I love the smell of churches- I can smell the incense from out here. It looks like someone was buried in the church grounds recently. There is a big patch of that fake grass to the right of the door with fresh flowers on it.
20.17
The end of Eglantine Avenue
I’ve reached the end of Eglantine AvenueI had a peek down Donneybrook Street, it didnt look very exciting.

20.26
Lisburn Road
Some things are illuminated.
We have jack Frost in the mornings painting everything white-
There must be a Harry Highlighter too, at night lighting up the place!
20.27
The corner of Lisburn Road and Wellington Park
Two small kids walking on a wall, dressed up in their winter coats and leather shoes.
20.28
Lisburn Road
There are 10 takeaways between the corner of Wellington Park and Wellesley Avenue.
All hopping at this time.
20.31
Lisburn Road, at the corner past Wellesley Avenue
On Tuesday 20th October at Ryans Bar there is a Chicken Wing eating competition
20.32
Lisburn Road
Methodist College Belfast. The railings outside it ask me to run my hands along them as I walk!
Its a really bum-pedy-bum-pedy feeling!
20.34

Across the road on Dunluce Avenue there are high rise buildings, with a great array of shades of rectangular yellow and orange lights lined up on their faces.

– There’s a very pretty house on the corner of this street. Its really small. Looks like it could have been a gate lodge. This could have led into a private residence, a big estate?

20.37
Elmwood Avenue
I pass Starbucks. I don’t like that place but if i sat in there I could draw a nice pic of the high rise across the road.
20.45
Starbucks, Elmwood Avenue
Sitting in Starbucks. I want to look out the window and draw the buildings and the street but there are too many signs in the way. They’re telling me they are a fairtrade company, they are the Financial Times best workplace in the UK in 2008 etc. I’ll just eat my lemon cake and camomile tea and move on.
20.49
Starbucks, Elmwood Avenue
is such a hive of activity. Terrible sugar filled food. They looked at me funny when I asked for Camomile tea and the lemon cake has fallen into my gut like a tonne weight. So heavily laden with sugar for such a pretty, innocent looking cake. Sweets of deceit!
– I think I’ll rename Starbucks the Date place, its all couple-y. People feel so comfortable in here. the girl in front of me has taken her shoes off and is curled up on the chair – giggling to the guy sitting facing her.

It’s tricky to draw a picture when you don’t want people to know your drawing one! I feel like a spy tonight. Starbucks = One large sitting-room!(its only missing a fireplace)
20.58
Elwood Avenue
Back on the street again. This is one of the first streets in Belfast that I’ve noticed with parking this way.

A guy is standing at his car and the electronic key won’t open his car. He has another key at home which he is going back for. This guy is totally embarrassed as he had offered a lady a lift home. Its a 20 minute walk home for him, another 20 minutes back on a miserable night like this.

21.12
Elwood Avenue
There is a student event happening with science students all queuing up outside wearing lab-coats and blue gloves. They are all headed for the club/pub ‘The Parlor’.
21.13
Elwood Avenue
-Lyric Theatre Presents The Beauty Queen of Leenane. Friday 18th September -Sunday 10th October. (damnn it missed it!)
-That brings me to the end of Elmwood Avenue.
– Among more white coat clad science students, a child maybe about 7 or 8 years old dressed in white hops onto his bike. For a moment I think the child is with the others but he’s with his mum heading home after a karate class.
21.15
University Avenue
There is a beautiful rose window lit up at the lyric theatre. I can’t get a good photo of it from my camera-phone.

These houses on Rugby road have shutters in the windows. Number 41, 43, 45, 49 +51 all have their beautiful shutters closed! Number 47 has them half open.
Number 61 has tinsel in the doorway, little early? Maybe it never came down last year! That brings me to the end of Rugby Road.
21.57
Botanic Court
-There is a long street to my left that I can see down, I must be on high ground here. Parts of Belfast are quite hilly.
-Botanic Primary School is to my right. There’s a house facing me with stained glass panels at the bottom of its downstairs windows. It looks good, it is unusual for a house to have this. They are using it for their privacy rather than a net curtain/blinds but it does remind me of a church!
